Appeal a Ticket

Appealing Parking Tickets

1. First Level: Appeals must be made within 20 calendar days from the date the ticket was issued to the Appeals Office in person, by fax, in writing, by email, or on-line.

2. Second Level: The decision of the Appeals Office may be considered by the Campus Parking Ticket Appeals Committee after the ticket has been paid; and must be submitted within 10 calendar days of the decision of the Appeals Office.

The Campus Parking Ticket Appeals Committee is the final step in the appeals process.

First Level Appeals

There are four ways to appeal a parking ticket — online, via fax, US mail, or in person.

Online Appeal

Appeals can be submitted online through the Commuter Services Online Parking Portal. Please include all applicable information in your appeal statement to ensure faster processing.

You will receive a response via email within 10 business days.

Faxed Appeal

Faxed appeals can be submitted to 801-581-4056. Please submit a photocopy of the ticket in question with your appeal statement or indicate the ticket number and license plate number on your appeal statement. Your appeal statement needs to include your name, email address, and an explanation of why you are appealing your ticket - with your desired outcome.

You will receive a response via email within 10 business days.

*If you wish to follow-up on the arrival of your fax, please call 801-581-6415.

US Mail Appeal

Written appeals can be mailed to:

Commuter Services - University of Utah
1901 E. South Campus Drive
Salt Lake City, Utah 84112-4360

Written appeals will be based on the postmark date on the envelope. Your appeal statement needs to include your name, email address, and an explanation of why you are appealing your ticket - with your desired outcome.

You will receive a response via email within 10 business days.

In Person

In person appeals are heard every Wednesday from 8:00 am-3:30 pm at the main Commuter Services office, located in the Annex Building.

Second Level Appeals

If you wish to further appeal your ticket after going through the first level of the appeal process, the next step is to submit your case to the Parking Appeals Committee — a group of student, staff, and faculty volunteers. Representatives from Commuter Services joins the committee in an ex officio capacity but do not have a vote. The Parking Appeals Committee meets on a need-be basis, up to once a month.

To prevent fines from increasing while the appeal is waiting to be heard by the committee, everyone petitioning must first pay the fines for the ticket they are appealing. Unpaid fines result in increased fees, student holds, payroll deduction, and possible referral to a collection agency.

After paying the parking fine, request an appeals committee form via email or visit our main Commuter Services office located in the Annex Building. Complete the form legibly and return it to us. The form will be submitted to the Parking Appeals Committee admin, who will email you the date, time, and place of your appeal hearing.
